It appears the Lone Star tick, yes the one named after Texas, is capable of transmitting a simple sugar into humans (a sugar not usually present in the human body) called alpha-gal that results in unintended horrifying effects. The body reacts to this unnatural invader and goes into overdrive to destroy it. Once this has occurred, just once, the body will react similarly to the ingestion of red meat. The immune system response can be quite severe and, unfortunately, will remain an issue for the victim of the bite for the remainder of their lives. It’s important to note that, so far, the Lone Star tick is the primary cause of this terrifying reaction to a tick bite.
