Where do ticks live?

If you live in Massachusetts, you have probably encountered a tick.

You or someone you know might also have been diagnosed with Lyme disease or other tick-borne illnesses. Of course, we know that ticks live in areas of vegetation. A day of hiking this time of year will make you susceptible to picking one up along the way. But where did you actually pick it up?

Where do ticks live in the woods?

Since ticks do not fly or jump, they are arachnids of opportunity. They quest. Questing essentially has the ticks lying in wait in an opportune area, awaiting their next host to pass close enough for them to attach to. They exert very little energy to hit their targets. In the woods, ticks will lie close to the ground, back legs holding onto vegetation with front lets outstretched for an unsuspecting passer-by. They typically lie close to the forest floor because that is where their blood sources are more commonly found. Ground animals, humans, and pets are all fair game down there!

Where do ticks like to hang out?

Ticks, like humans, are not averse to a relaxing day at the beach. If you visit the coast or even spend a fun-filled day at Shore Park Beach, you might be surprised to find ticks there, but it is not uncommon. Since they enjoy hanging out at the beach, they might be found in surrounding areas of grass and other low-lying vegetation. This means that you should perform a tick check on yourself, your kids, and your pets after spending time by the water.

Where do ticks live around your yard?

Ticks seek safety in areas around your home and yard. They can often be found in protected areas, where they are shielded from heat and direct sunlight. Some of these places might be around your landscaping and in your garden mulch, under your deck, in wood piles, and other areas that are dim and moist.
