Keep Skeeter Syndrome from Showing Up at Your Emerald Isle, NC Yard

If you’re like most people, you’ve encountered others that just don’t handle the occasional mosquito bite too well. Most victims of mosquito bites will develop a small, possibly red, itchy bump. This is a direct result of the blood thinning agent that’s present in the mosquito’s saliva. However, there are instances where a simple mosquito bite can be much more apparent, irritating and even painful.
Skeeter syndrome symptoms include localized swelling and acute redness near or at the location of the bite. While you would presume the reaction takes place quickly, it can actually take hours or even days for the symptoms of skeeter syndrome to show up. While it’s quite rare, its symptoms are quite troubling. In addition to the initial onset of swelling at the location of the bite, the extremity which was bitten may even swell in its entirety and feel hot and “stiff”.
Who is Most Likely to be Affected by Skeeter Syndrome?
Technically, people of all ages can be affected by skeeter syndrome. However, it’s more common in younger children and the elderly due to their lack of a stronger immune system. Healthy adults will usually not see any symptoms similar to “skeeter syndrome”; however, it is a possibility.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting, different mosquito species have different types of saliva. So, if you lived in an area that had one type of common mosquito, then move to a new location with a different mosquito species, you may end up with skeeter syndrome as a result of your immune system not being “familiar” with that type of saliva. It’s unknown why certain people will, seemingly overnight, develop these strong reactions to mosquito bites.
So, How do You Treat Skeeter Syndrome?
In most instances, treating skeeter syndrome are rather simple. The use and/or combination of warm compresses, along with topical creams or antihistamine tablets is very common in helping the swelling and discomfort to subside. However, if you or anyone in your family suffers from severe reactions, including anaphylactic shock from mosquito bites, be proactive, carry an EpiPen with you, and have your family members carry them, as well.
Adding on to being proactive, with regard to skeeter syndrome, start at home! Make sure you don’t have standing water in your yard and don’t forget to even check your gutters. It only takes a bottle cap’s worth of water to allow for mosquito breeding. Next, hire a proven mosquito control company that will ensure your yard isn’t a mosquito feeding frenzy. At Mosquito Squad of Wilmington and the Crystal Coast, we will reduce your yard’s mosquito population by up to 90% and help eliminate mosquito breeding areas with larvicide if needed.
