Best thing about winter: No Mosquitoes!
Although it may seem as they have all disappeared, mosquitoes can and do survive Winter in Wisconsin. These pests have strategies to survive in the colder temperatures. Many mosquitoes go dormant in the Winter and seek shelter in different places, such as holes or yard debris, waiting out the cold temperatures. Some female mosquitoes laid their eggs back in the Fall and those eggs can lay dormant and freeze. Their larvae will keep until the weather warms back up and they produce new mosquitoes to hatch and emerge. The farmers almanac has been around since 1818. While cold temperatures my provide some temporary relief, it remains to be seen that the Winter months will reduce the populations returning in the Spring and Fall.
