Ticks in the Winter

It is entirely possible to still pick up a tick this Winter. Although their activity decreases some, adult deer ticks do remain active year round. Many hide in any leaf litter which may be covered with some snow by now. Females can lay around 3,000 eggs which can lay dormant until Spring. 

The Wisconsin department of Health Services posted an article just last year on how there is a connection between the climate and infectious disease. Our area is becoming warmer, and wetter. These climate changes have been leading to increasing pest populations which increases the numbers for disease carrying pests. Changes in the climate allows certain mosquito species to thrive. In addition to the increase in populations, it also leads to new species in Wisconsin. The diseases new to this area being spread by mosquitoes are Chickungunya, Dengue Fever, and Jamestown Canyon Virus. The most common diseases spread by the deer tick in our area is Lyme Disease and Anaplasmosis. However, other tick borne illnesses in Wisconsin can include Erlichiosis, Powassan Virus, and Babesiosis. A new emerging tick to Wisconsin has been the lone star tick.
