That is right.   A recently discovery in shale deposits found prehistoric mosquitoes that are extremely similar to the mosquitoes of today.   There are “morphological difference that distinguish specific species….but overall they are extremely similar” says Dale Greenwalt about the fossils.

Greenwalt and his team have found of 20,000 insect fossils at their site at Kishenehn Basin in northwestern Montana.
