More Troubling Zika News: Elderly Zika Patient in Utah May have Infected Family Caregiver

It seems like the news lately is constantly unsettling. Now we have more alarming Zika news from a a recent article in the Washington Post.  An elderly Utah man who died after contracting Zika from travel abroad may have passed the virus to a family caregiver who never left the country. This raises a lot of concern for the possible new route of transmission of the mosquito borne virus. 

Officials are looking into how the second person became infected. One reason may be close contact between the ill patient and caregiver who has since recovered.

A Utah health officer said this is a very unusual case, and that the individual does not have any of the known risk factors seen so far with the virus. The individual helped provide care for the deceased patient. They did not have sexual contact with anyone with the virus. Other details were not provided, but the primary mosquitoes known for carrying Zika are usually not present in Utah. Just to be safe, health officials are testing mosquitoes around both person’s homes to test out mode of transmission.
