Medicaid paying to prevent Zika?

Great news from Medicaid – you can use it to cover mosquito Repellent to help prevent the spread of the Zika virus.  According to an article by USA Today “Coverage of repellent — when prescribed by a health professional — with the federal matching dollars given other Medicaid-covered treatments is the primary change in the new Department of Health and Human Services guidance.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the Zika virus is the cause of birth defects showing up in epidemic proportions in Brazil and other countries with outbreaks. It also is linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, where nerve cells are attacked, causing paralysis. The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes, and can be transmitted sexually or through blood transfusions.

The article goes on to say that last February President Obama requested from Congress to combat Zika a provision to boost Puerto Rico’s Medicaid program by $250 million for a year. Puerto Rico has been hard hit by both Zika and a financial crisis that has left the territory unable to cover the cost of testing and treating residents.
