When Are Ticks the Most Active in NC?

Posted by Mosquito Squad

December 20, 2023

Ticks are becoming more and more of a problem in North Carolina. While the populations of ticks may not be as high as you find in some areas in the Northeast and Midwest, they are continuing to grow in the Triad area of NC. As the tick population grows, so do the chances of being infected with the diseases they carry.

Ticks in the Greensboro, High Point, and Winston Salem areas of NC do not really die off in the winter here. We do not have enough hard freezes for long periods of time. Ticks are a hearty insect and are able to survive the Winter in the Triad. They are the most active form late March through October.

Most Common Ticks in Triad of NC

  • Dog Tick

  • Blacklegged Tick

  • Lone Star Tick

Most Common Diseases Ticks in NC carry

  • Lyme Disease

  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

  • STARI (Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness)

How to Protect Yourself and Pets from Ticks

Mosquito Squad recommends you follow the 6 C’s in Tick Control

  • CLEAR OUT: Reduce your tick exposure by clearing out areas where lawn and tree debris gathers. Ticks thrive in moist, shady areas and tend to die in sunny, dry areas. Don't position playground equipment, decks, or patios near treed areas.

  • CLEAN: Eliminate leaf litter by cleaning it around the house and lawn edges. We also recommend mowing tall grass to keep your lawn short.

  • CHOOSE PLANTS: Since deer can bring ticks to your yard, select plants and shrubs that don’t attract deer. You can also install physical barriers to keep deer out of your yard. Check with your local nursery to determine the best choices for your area. Learn which plants deter deer from HGTV.

  • CHECK HIDING PLACES: Know tick hiding places and check them frequently. Fences, brick walls, and patio retaining walls are popular hiding places.

  • CARE FOR FAMILY PETS: Family pets can suffer from tick-borne disease and can also carry infected ticks into your home. Talk to your veterinarian about using tick collars and sprays.

  • CALL THE PROS: Our traditional mosquito control treatment kills adult ticks on contact
