Mosquitoes are one of the hardiest insects we have in our environments. They are found almost everywhere in our world. Even 8,000 feet up in the Himalayas.

Here are some interesting and somewhat scary facts about that mosquito flying around in your backyard:

  • Mosquitoes have something in common with werewolves. Beware the full moon! Mosquitoes are 500 times more active during a full moon.
  • Mosquitoes have been dated back 400 million years. They were feasting on dinosaurs long before they ever tasted human blood.
  • 176 different species of mosquitoes can be found in the USA. There are 2700 species of mosquitoes in the world.
  • It is estimated that in the US alone mosquitoes suck 1.6 MILLION gallons of blood from people a year.
  • Pregnant women get bitten twice as much. Their body temperature usually run 1 degree higher and they exhale 21% more Carbon Dioxide. These things make them more attractive to mosquitoes.
  • Our skin gives off 340 different chemical odors. Some of them are like a dinner bell to mosquitoes announcing a meal to be had.
  • Smelly socks or feet make you very attractive to some mosquito species.
  • Mosquitoes don't actually bite. They do not have teeth. Only females "bite" .They need a protein meal in order to lay their eggs. They use what is called a proboscis to pierce the skin and insert this needle like organ that fins a blood vessel to suck your blood.
  • Male mosquitoes find its female mate by listening for the beat of her wings. She beats her wings 500 times per second. This gives off a high pitch frequency that guides the males to them.
  • Female mosquitoes live, on average 2 months. Some can live up to as much as 6 months. They lay 300 eggs at a time and as much as 3000 over a lifetime.
