Going Fishing
Posted by Mosquito SquadDecember 20, 2023
Living in the Sunshine State and the Greater Tampa Bay area offers not only beautiful weather, parks and beaches but great year-round fishing opportunities. Many of us that live on the water are lucky enough to get the ‘big catch” without even leaving our backyard.
In fact, Tampa Bay is the largest open-water estuary in Florida and is home to many species that offer excellent recreational fishing opportunities. See below for some of Mosquito Squad’s favorite local ‘fishing hotspots’.
Some of the most sought-after fish in our waters include; Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, Seatrout, Sheepshead, Flounder, Grouper, Snapper, Cobia, Mackerel to name a few.
While fishing is fun and relaxing, we all know that anything involving the outdoors and a body of water will just about always include bugs, many of which bite. While mosquitoes are expected in those settings, protection against being bitten is achievable. How you ask, keep on reading.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME TO Go Fishing
Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. If possible, plan your fishing trip during the middle of the day when these pests have relatively lower activity levels. You should also choose fishing spots away from stagnant water. Also remember to remove any standing water near your fishing area that may serve as breeding sites. Empty containers frequently and overturn buckets that you are not using. By reducing nearby breeding grounds, you can minimize mosquito populations and bites.
WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING
Cover your skin when fishing in mosquito-prone areas. Wear long-sleeve shirts, pants, and socks. Given that mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics in light colors.
AVOID SCENTED PRODUCTS
Avoid strong scents while fishing. Mosquitoes are attracted to perfumes, scented lotions, and scented soaps. Forgoing these products before and/or during your next fishing trip will help make you less desirable to these blood-sucking pests.
