Silver Lake Tick Control

July 18, 2024

When the weather gets warm, it's time to be on high alert for ticks! The wooded and grassy areas of Silver Lake are perfect habitats for ticks. One of the biggest challenges they pose is their ability to go undetected - most people won't notice when they've been bitten, especially if the bite comes from a tick in its nymph form when they are no bigger than a poppy seed. This makes it difficult to avoid exposure to the illnesses ticks carry, but you've got a powerful weapon on your side with Mosquito Squad's tick control solutions.

What species of ticks are found in Silver Lake?

Wisconsin is home to at least 16 tick species, and though some of them are more or less harmless for humans, there are a few that can cause health issues due to tick-borne diseases. For Silver Lake residents, two species are particularly noteworthy: deer ticks and American dog ticks. Both can transmit multiple diseases to humans and animals.

Deer ticks, also called black-legged ticks, are dangerous even as tiny nymphs. They prefer wooded areas and tall grasses, most often hitching rides on white-tailed deer who then carry them into backyards and other places frequented by people. These ticks can spread Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis.

American dog ticks, or wood ticks, are less choosy about their environment. They thrive across North America, even indoors, and are common in areas with minimal tree cover. Dog kennels tend to be hotspots for these ticks, which can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever to humans and canine ehrlichiosis to dogs.

Why do I need Silver Lake tick control?

Tick-borne diseases in Wisconsin vary widely in severity, from quite mild to potentially life-threatening. Here's a list of the most common tick-borne diseases found in our state:

Lyme Disease

Flu-like symptoms in the heat of summer may be a sign of Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne illness in the United States. Lyme is treatable with antibiotics, but many people may experience long-term health consequences.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

The most common symptom of RMSF is a rash on the extremities that appears 5-10 days after a tick bite. The rash is made up of flat, pink spots and does not itch. If you suspect exposure to this illness, seek medical attention as soon as possible. It can be treated with antibiotics, but if treatment is delayed, you risk serious complications, including nerve damage, hearing loss, partial paralysis, and gangrene.

Anaplasmosis

The symptoms of anaplasmosis may be mild or moderate, and include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress. These symptoms usually appear around 1 to 2 weeks after a tick bite.

Babesiosis

The parasites that cause babesiosis attack red blood cells, leading to a specific kind of anemia known as hemolytic anemia, in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. This can lead to serious, life-threatening complications for some populations, especially immunocompromised people.

Canine ehrlichiosis

If your dog was bitten by a tick in the last 1-3 weeks and is showing certain symptoms like loss of appetite, fatigue, and unexplained bleeding or bruising, the problem may be canine ehrlichiosis. It is treatable with antibiotics, but left untreated, it can be life-threatening.
