Pleasant Prairie Tick Control

Posted by Mosquito Squad

July 18, 2024

Summer heralds the beginning of a season of peak activity for ticks here in Pleasant Prairie, WI. Any time spent outdoors poses a risk of exposure to serious tick-borne illnesses. What’s worse is that tick bites often go undetected until symptoms begin to break out weeks or even months later. Since it’s so difficult to feel or sometimes even see ticks, it is important to be vigilant. Mosquito Squad’s tick control solutions can help.

What species of ticks are found in Pleasant Prairie?

There have been at least 16 species of tick identified in Wisconsin during the past few years. Each species is associated with different risks, and some species are more prone to choosing animals for hosts rather than humans. (That’s one reason it’s so important to maintain routine care with a veterinarian for your family pets!) There are two particular species of ticks Pleasant Prairie residents should be aware of: the deer tick and the American dog tick, both of which carry multiple tick-borne diseases.

The deer tick, or black-legged tick, is as dangerous in its poppy seed-sized nymph stage as in its larger adult stage. This species thrives in wooded areas and among tall grasses, where they lie in wait for hosts they can crawl onto. If you frequently see deer in your backyard, your home is more vulnerable to deer ticks, as white-tailed deer are the preferred host for this species. Deer ticks are carriers of Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis.

As for American dog ticks, also known as wood ticks, this species isn’t nearly as picky about where it likes to hang out. It can be found just about everywhere in the contiguous North American continent and thrives in areas with little or no tree cover. It can also thrive indoors for weeks. Dog kennels are a major breeding area for American dog ticks, so be sure to thoroughly check over your furry friend after boarding or doggy daycare. These ticks are associated with Rocky Mountain spotted fever for humans as well as canine ehrlichiosis.

Why do I need Pleasant Prairie tick control?

The diseases that are associated with ticks range in severity. Some are mild or barely noticeable, while others can have consequences that follow you for the rest of your life or even lead to fatality. Some of Wisconsin’s most common tick-borne diseases are listed below.

Lyme Disease

Around half a million Americans are diagnosed each year with Lyme. Infection often leads to flu-like symptoms. 70 to 80% of infected individuals also get a distinctive rash in the shape of a bull’s-eye.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Early detection and treatment are crucial for this illness, though it can be difficult to spot due to a range of unspecific symptoms, including fever, headache, rash, and stomach pain. If left untreated, it may quickly progress into a life-threatening problem.

Anaplasmosis

This disease manifests symptoms such as high fever accompanied by chills, headache, muscle pains, and gastrointestinal discomfort. In order to prevent serious complications, including respiratory and organ failure, early treatment is important.

Babesiosis

Of particular concern for those who are immunocompromised, this bacterial infection affects the red blood cells and can cause a specific form of anemia.

Canine ehrlichiosis

Thousands of dogs are diagnosed with this illness every year, and that number is growing. There are no signs of infection during the first two stages, but by the time the illness becomes detectable, the risk for systematic chronic issues is much higher.
