Crystal Lake Tick Control
Posted by Mosquito SquadSeptember 6, 2024
In Wisconsin, you’re most likely to see tick activity between the months of May and November, but vigilance is important throughout the year, given that there are some ticks that bite even beyond this period. Because of this, it’s important to invest in a solid plan for dealing with ticks throughout the year. Mosquito Squad can help.
What Species of Ticks Are Found in Crystal Lake?
Of the several species found in our state, there are two particularly problematic species of ticks that Crystal Lake residents should be concerned about due to their capacity for spreading tick-borne disease to both animals and humans.
Even in their nymph stage, during which they are no bigger than a poppy seed, deer ticks (sometimes black-legged ticks) spread diseases, including Lyme disease, babesiosis, and anaplasmosis. These ticks favor wooded areas and tall grass and frequently hitch rides on white-tailed deer, which inadvertently transport them into backyards and other areas by people. Keeping deer out of your yard can help minimize these ticks around your home.
American dog ticks (or wood ticks) have an unfortunate knack for thriving just about anywhere, even indoors (hence the need for year-round vigilance). They can be found throughout the United States. Their name comes from the fact that dog kennels frequently serve as hotspots for this species. Transmission of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and canine ehrlichiosis is attributed to American dog ticks.
Why Do I Need Crystal Lake tick control?
Some tick-borne diseases are mild, while others are much more serious. The ones that circulate most frequently in Crystal Lake and throughout Wisconsin are:
Lyme Disease
Since the flu-like symptoms caused by Lyme are so non-specific, it’s important to be on the lookout for its distinctive bull’s-eye rash. However, be aware that this rash only appears in around 8 out of 10 symptomatic individuals.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
An abrupt, high fever coupled with flat, pink, painless spots on the extremities should be cause for alarm. These symptoms belong to RMSF, a disease that must be treated as quickly as possible with antibiotics or else the infected individual may experience life-threatening complications.
Anaplasmosis
The symptoms of this bacterial disease, including fever, severe headache, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, tend to be mild. You’ll most likely notice them around 1-2 weeks after a tick bite.
Babesiosis
Due to the form of anemia caused by babesiosis, in which red blood cells cannot be replaced as quickly as they are destroyed by the parasites released through the tick’s bite, babesiosis is of particular concern for immunocompromised people.
Canine ehrlichiosis
For a dog who has recently spent extended time outdoors or in an environment with many other dogs - such as a daycare - and is demonstrating lack of appetite, fatigue, and unexplained bleeding or bruising, the problem may be canine ehrlichiosis.
