What Diseases Do Ticks Carry in NY?
Posted by Mosquito SquadDecember 20, 2023
Throughout the Northeast, people are once again heading to frolic in the outdoors, whether that be in the woods or their own backyards. After the thaw we experience every year, warm weather is incredibly welcome, and we can expect that this summer has plenty of warm evenings and amazing moments with friends and family in store. One thing to consider before you start spending lots of time outside, though, is whether your outdoor living space is as safe as you think it is. Because of where we live, the reality is far less ideal than most people would assume. Why is this? Often overlooked, ticks are one of the greatest threats to our outdoor living experience, despite their tiny and unassuming size. These crab-like arachnids are found throughout our region, as well as in many other states around the country, but the ticks in our part of the world are a little different.
Why is Scarsdale tick control important?
Normally you’d assume that ticks are a greater threat in the southern United States, but some of the most dangerous ticks around are right here. The ticks here are such a focus of concern because many of them carry dangerous diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Ticks are very good at evading detection due to their minuscule size and their painless bite, so they can stay attached to their victims for up to 10 days. It is during this time frame that diseases can jump from ticks to humans, and it is important to be prepared. All tick-borne pathogens can be devastating to your health, and the most common one is Lyme disease. Infecting an estimated 400,000+ people every year, this disease is at the center of a potential health crisis. Other diseases ticks can carry are Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Powassan disease, Rocky Mountain fever, and tick paralysis. Symptoms vary for each of these diseases, but the consequences of contracting one can be life-altering. Powassan virus, for example, has a mortality rate of around 10% among serious cases, and roughly half of survivors have lasting symptoms that include things like muscle loss and memory problems. Contracting a tick-borne disease can be incredibly dangerous, so it is important to be prepared with tick control in Scarsdale.
