At long last, spring temperatures are starting to come around, and we all know that summer is on the horizon! The outdoor living season is approaching, which means we need to start preparing. From relaxing outdoors to hosting special events, there are all kinds of great times to look forward to when warmer weather comes around. However, have you considered what you can do to improve your outdoor experience? This is a perplexing question for many, but there is one answer that we often come across. For homeowners across the Northeast, ticks are a huge problem, as well as a threat to outdoor living. As great as the weather and the foliage might be in the coming months, there isn’t much to enjoy when hungry ticks are scouring the land for blood. In residential areas, we are lulled into a false sense of security, when in reality there are lots of ticks that are likely lurking in your yard’s greenery. Difficult to see and secretive in their feeding behavior, ticks are hard to detect, which means you need to keep a careful eye out for these arachnids.

Tick control is essential this summer

Why is it so concerning that ticks are common in our area? There are a few reasons. First and foremost, we don’t want parasites living on our bodies. The mere thought of a tick latching onto us is enough to cringe, but this is only the beginning of what makes ticks so dangerous. The biggest reason to be concerned about ticks is their tendency to carry diseases that can be devastating to human health. Despite their tiny size, ticks carry pathogens that will pack a wallop. For example, Lyme disease is increasingly common in our region, and this is highly concerning. This disease is incredibly common in ticks, so the chances of contracting the disease after a tick has latched on for 36-48 hours is very high. Chronic Lyme disease is disturbingly common, and severe cases can include everything from swollen joints to short-term memory loss. Even after being cured, some patients retain autoimmune issues that can last for months and even years. Thus, prevention is the best protection against ticks and Lyme disease.
