Lyme Disease Could Be a Ticking Time Bomb

In your day-to-day life, what precautions do you take to ensure you are living happily and healthily? The measures to ensure such important parts of life vary from person to person, but some are almost always consistent between people. For example, maintaining an insurance policy, eating good foods, and staying aware of your surroundings are all essential tasks to continue living healthily. However, there is one consideration people often forget. In the Northeast, we live in one of the most dangerous tick regions in the nation.
Although ticks are often associated with humid, southerly environments, our neck of the woods still has plenty of them. And, unlike the south, we see much higher rates of tick-borne diseases among our ranks. Despite their tiny size, ticks can pack a massive punch due to their feeding behavior. Ticks are among the least sanitary creatures around because they are parasites and depend on the blood of various animals to survive. If you can envision a used syringe with a mind of its own, this is very close to how you might describe a tick. Although they don’t do so intentionally, ticks will pick up diseases from their victims and transmit the pathogens to subsequent meals.
Unfortunately, humans are included on the menu when ticks decide to feed. Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States, and it already poses a serious health threat. It is estimated that roughly 300,000 people contract Lyme disease every year. Why is the number so high? Lyme disease is incredibly difficult to diagnose, with roughly 90% of cases going unreported. Untreated, Lyme disease can lead to chronic conditions that can last for years. Disturbingly, patients can experience symptoms even after being cured due to a condition called Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome. Symptoms of this ailment include fatigue, pain, and difficulty thinking that can last for longer than six months. With such a high rate of cases, and more expected in the future, defending against ticks has never been more important.
