For years we’ve talked about how important it is for you to send your ticks into tickreport.com so scientists can better understand the spread of tick-borne diseases. Well, now it is time for you to keep a close eye on the mosquitoes in your area and report those as well. But this is a whole lot easier than catching mosquitoes and sending them in. Check it out!
Mosquito Tracking Smartphone Application
The Mosquito Habitat Mapper app is available for anyone who wants to download it to participate in tracking mosquitoes. Best of all, you get to choose how much you contribute or don’t, and the app will guide the way.
Track Standing Water
Standing water is the quickest and easiest way for mosquito populations to grow. Whether found in a bucket, a kid’s toy, bottle cap, or planter, without movement or the natural predators found in bigger bodies of water, mosquito larvae survive and thrive to become biting adults. When you’re out on a walk, you can use the app to simply track standing water, take pictures, and report it through the app.
Investigate Standing Water for Mosquito Larvae
Take your involvement a step further. With the Mosquito Habitat Mapper app, you can investigate the water for mosquito larvae. The app will show you what to look for and allow you to report the existence of larvae.
Take Mosquito Larvae Samples and Identify Them
If you have the materials on-hand, when you come across standing water with mosquito larvae, the app will guide you through taking samples. Once you have retrieved samples of the mosquito larvae from the water, the app has an easy key to help you identify the type for reporting within the app itself.
Remove the Standing Water aka. Mosquito Habitat
Standing water should really have a new name: mosquito habitat. The app will urge you to remove the standing water if possible or treat it with a mosquito dunk (larvicide) if you are possible. Your contribution to the tracking mosquitoes through the app is also your chance to help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in the area.
Reduce Mosquito-Borne Disease Risk in Your Community
There is a myriad of ways you can help reduce the local mosquito population. When out and about in public areas, if you see standing water you can dump, do so. If you see a drainage issue, report it to the city. At your home, keep all standing water cleaned up by following the Ts of Mosquito Control. Take it a step further at home by hiring professional backyard mosquito control services to keep your yard mosquito free – which will ultimately lower populations in surrounding yards too! And NOW you can use a smartphone app to help guide you in your mosquito reduction and reporting efforts.
With a large volume of data being entered into the Mosquito Habitat Mapper, the GLOBE program has created a place where anyone can see the mosquito data in the system. The data will provide vital information for identifying mosquito infestations and predicting mosquito-borne disease outbreaks.
Give the app a try and let us know what you think. And in the meantime, give us a call for all of your home or business mosquito control needs.
