After all, no one wants to get all snuggled up in bed, only to have that mosquito bite keeping them awake with a persistent itch.
Mosquito Bite Itch Relief
The familiar red bump and itch don’t have to be a multi-day nuisance with these mosquito bite itch relief options. We recommend trying each of them until you find the one that works best for you!
10. Insect Bite Devices: There are a variety of new mosquito bite relief tools and devices on the market. Some apply concentrated heat. Another uses suction to remove venom and mosquito saliva. We have not tested them all, but if you check out the online reviews, you can make an informed decision on which one you may test.
9. Soap and Water: The CDC recommends washing the bite with warm water and soap as soon after the bite occurs as possible. It is said to help relieve some of the itch.
8. Ice It: Also recommended by the CDC and grandmothers everywhere, ice your mosquito bite as soon as you notice the swell. Place an ice cube directly on the bite for about 10 minutes. Repeat as needed to reduce swelling and numb potential itch.
7. Baking Soda Paste: Add just enough water to a small amount of baking soda in a bowl, mix until it makes a paste. Apply the baking soda paste directly to the bite for 10 minutes, then wash it away. Baking soda paste is also an excellent home remedy for wasp and bee stings.
6. Anti-itch Creams: Choose your favorite over-the-counter antihistamine or anti-itch cream. Keep it handy for relief from a variety of insect bites. New anti-itch creams hit the market all the time, with increasingly better results.
5. Calamine Lotion: The classic pink liquid is still a go-to for many. Bonus: seeing your family running around covered in Pepto-pink dots brings back nostalgic childhood memories.
4. Hot Spoon: We hesitate to recommend a hot spoon, as it requires a great deal of care to avoid burning yourself. However, there is some evidence to support concentrated heat to reduce swelling, itch, and pain.
3. Essential Oils: Tea tree oil and lavender oil are both popular essential oils to reduce itching and inflammation. Like dietary supplements, though, essential oils are not regulated, and we do urge you to proceed with caution.
2. Aloe vera: Aloe is a popular solution for dry skin and other skin ailments. With proven anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the swelling of a mosquito bite can often provide relief.
1. Honey: Apply a small drop of honey to your mosquito bite. Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it a popular home remedy.
