Southeastern Massachusetts EEE Outbreak: August 19, 2019 Update

Mosquito-borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a bigger threat in Southeastern Massachusetts this year than it has been in some time. As the risks grow and more mosquitoes test positive for the virus, we want to keep you apprised of the most recent information.

EEE in Humans

The second human case of EEE in Massachusetts was confirmed by the Massachusetts Department of Health on Friday, August 16^th. The man is from Grafton in Worcester County. He was diagnosed after having a seizure.

A Plymouth man was the first case of EEE in 6 years. The last news story about his condition reported that he is in a coma.

Massachusetts Mosquitoes Continue to Test Positive for EEE

299 Mosquito samples across the state have now tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus.

Nineteen counties across the state have been identified as being at critical risk for EEE, with another eighteen in the “High” risk category.

Echoing the advice from the Massachusetts Department of Health, we urge you to take every precaution to protect yourself from mosquito bites. While the state did mist in Bristol and Plymouth counties, they remind residents that while the mist does lower the mosquito population, it does not completely eliminate the risk.

Avoid being outside during peak mosquito hours (dusk and dawn) and use an EPA registered mosquito repellent.

We urge you to know the symptoms of EEE in humans so you can identify infection right away and seek medical care. Also, check your veterinarian records to be sure your horses are up-to-date on their vaccines.
