Is Dengue Fever in Massachusetts a Cause for Concern?

Posted by Mosquito Squad

July 22, 2024

Here at Mosquito Squad of Southeastern Massachusetts, keeping our community informed about mosquito-borne illnesses is a priority. In our recent blog, we discussed the generally low risk of Dengue fever in our region. However, a recent news article from Boston’s WCVB reported 50 cases of Dengue fever in Massachusetts since then.

While these cases may seem alarming, it's important to understand the context. These are likely travel-related infections, as Dengue fever is not native to Massachusetts. The primary mosquito species that transmit the virus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are also uncommon in our area.

However, when it comes to Dengue fever, if our local mosquitoes bite an infected individual, they can become infected. Once our local mosquitoes become infected, the disease could possibly spread rather quickly through the remainder of the mosquito season.

The Dengue Fever Threat From Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are more than just a summer nuisance. They can transmit a variety of diseases, including Dengue fever, West Nile virus, and Zika virus. While the recent Dengue cases were likely travel-related, it's a good reminder to be mindful of mosquito bites and take steps to reduce the mosquito population around your home. Our traditional barrier treatment reduces mosquitoes and provides weeks of protection for your entire property.

Effective Mosquito Management

Fortunately, there are several effective ways to manage mosquito populations and minimize the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses:

  • Reduce Mosquito Breeding Grounds: Standing water is a breeding haven for mosquitoes. Regularly check your property for potential sources, such as clogged gutters, old tires, birdbaths, and even small containers like bottle caps. Get rid of anything that collects water, or ensure it gets emptied and cleaned frequently.
  • Maintain Your Yard: Keeping your grass cut short and trimming bushes around your home helps reduce shady areas where adult mosquitoes like to rest.
  • Mindful Outdoor Activities: When spending time outside, especially during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk), consider wearing long sleeves and pants. Applying insect repellent containing DEET is another effective way to deter mosquito bites.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you experience flu-like symptoms, fever, severe headache, or joint pain after traveling to an area with Dengue fever, consult with a healthcare provider right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes.

Working Together to Reclaim Your Yard This Summer

By implementing these preventative measures and staying informed about mosquito-borne illnesses, we can all work together to create a safer and more enjoyable outdoor environment for ourselves and our families. Remember, while the recent Dengue fever cases may raise some eyebrows, the risk in our region remains relatively low. However, taking steps to control the mosquito population around your home is always a wise decision.
