Does Catnip Work as a Mosquito Repellent?

December 20, 2023

There are dozens of DIY mosquito repellents. It’s been said that catnip is a great mosquito repellent. So, is it?

A study highlighted by SciTechDaily shows that catnip can be used as an effective way to keep mosquitoes away. Results showed the cats who had catnip on their bodies had fewer mosquitoes buzzing around them.

The study was conducted by rubbing paper covered in chemicals from catnip and silver vine on the cat’s heads. Researchers monitored the number of mosquitoes that buzzed near their faces with and without catnip on their heads.

Additionally, researchers put the chemical in enclosures with the cats to see if the cats intentionally rubbed against the chemical. Keep in mind, these are chemicals that cats love. As you would expect, they did intentionally rub against the floor, walls, and ceiling of the cages and transfer the chemical onto their bodies.

Though, the jury is still out if cats are aware of the health benefits of avoiding mosquitoes.

How does catnip work as a mosquito repellent?

Catnip and silver vine share a common chemical called nepetalactol that’s proven to attract cats. It’s also shown to repel mosquitoes. This chemical provides cats with a natural defense against mosquitoes and researchers suggest the possibility of protection against parasitic insects and viruses as wellcat sitting in tall grass.

Will catnip work as a mosquito repellent for me?

Nepetalactol is an effective mosquito repellent. This much has been proven by this study. You wouldn’t have to worry about mosquitoes following you around your yard should you rub catnip or silver vine on your clothes. However, you might also be repellent to people as well.

Ultimately, yes, catnip does serve as an effective mosquito repellent. Although, I have no intention of rolling around in catnip to avoid mosquito bites.
