Tick Control for Prevention of Lyme Related Disorder

You’re probably looking forward to this summer just like everyone who endured the long, cold winter here in New Jersey. Finally, the outdoor living season beckons, and there is much to look forward to. Whether you enjoy hiking or simply lounging in your outdoor living space, the excellent weather arriving soon will make any outdoor activity pleasant. Much like humans, however, there are nasty creatures that reemerge when the warm season returns. Ticks are one of these. In past centuries, tick populations were at an all-time low due to deforestation, which led to habitat loss as well as a lack of food sources. Ticks were so vulnerable, in fact, they were on the verge of extinction in the Northeast! The same can’t be said in modern times, though. These tiny arachnids have begun to consistently reach population numbers greater than we have ever seen. From the woods to our backyards, ticks are coming in force this summer, and it is best to be prepared. Why? Ticks don’t just deliver a short bite like a mosquito. They can latch on for a period of up to 10 days, and they often carry diseases that will transmit to us during that time frame. The most common of these illnesses is Lyme disease. Assuming a tick is carrying the bacteria responsible for Lyme disease, the arachnid need only stay attached for around 36-48 hours, though some research suggests that the pathogen can transmit more quickly.

Lyme disease is concerning for a few reasons. Chronic Lyme disease can cause everything from swollen joints to short-term memory loss, and the disease is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Thus, chronic disease is somewhat common among those who contract the illness. Further, some patients experience symptoms even after being cured. Post-Treatment Lyme disease syndrome occurs after a patient has had their required regimen of antibiotics that takes 2-4 weeks. After being cured, a patient with this syndrome can experience pain, difficulty thinking, and fatigue that lasts for more than 6 months after treatment. Clearly, the consequences of contracting Lyme disease can be severe, so defensive measures like Millstone tick control are critically important.
