Mosquito Control Still Best Bet Against EEE

In our part of the world, we don’t often need to be concerned about the diseases mosquitoes spread. Mosquitoes are the most dangerous creature on the planet to humans, responsible for roughly over 1 million deaths per year. Almost all of these deaths occur in Africa and Asia, where mosquito-borne diseases are very common in the continents’ warm climates. The United States has largely been spared any large outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, but this trend could change in the coming years. Due to climate change, normal environmental conditions are shifting dramatically and altering the threat level of certain insects. The mosquito season is gradually lengthening as temperatures increase, meaning mosquitoes have more time to breed, pick up diseases, and spread them to the animals they feed on.
Mosquito control treatments are more important than ever
For many reasons, the prospect of more diseases in the U.S. is a warning to those who enjoy spending time outside. So, what diseases should you be on the lookout for now and in the future? One that has gained a lot of attention is Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). Also found in horses, this disease causes flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, can cause severe neurological damage and even death. Indeed, this virus has a mortality of around 30% in those who develop severe cases. Right now, the disease is relatively rare, but there’s no telling what the future holds for this virus. For example, in 2019 there was an outbreak of EEE in the Northeast, which resulted in 38 cases and 15 deaths. This disease is nothing to mess with, which is why work is underway to develop a vaccine against the virus. Results are promising right now, but there is still much trial and error to be accomplished in the coming months and years. In the meantime, there are other proven solutions like professional mosquito control, which will keep you defended against mosquitoes.
