Dengue in NJ, Precaution Recommended

Posted by Mosquito Squad

July 31, 2024

You might have heard in recent news that New Jersey has 49 confirmed cases of Dengue to-date in 2024.

Will you contract Dengue locally in New Jersey? It is unlikely at this time that NJ residents would contract Dengue in-state, or even in our region. While Dengue is not yet a local threat, we must do the work to lower the chances of that happening. Just because it hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean that it cannot happen.

As of June 20, 2024, the Americas have confirmed nearly 10 million Dengue infections, which is twice as many as the entire year in 2023.

Where might travelers be at risk for Dengue?

The only three locations in the United State that have local Dengue infections. Florida reports 12 cases; U.S. Virgin Islands reports 19; Puerto Rico reports 1,918 cases of locally spread Dengue as of July 2024. If you are visiting any of these areas, you are at risk of contracting Dengue with only one mosquito bite. The CDC is recommending travelers take precaution by using personal mosquito repellent in these high-risk areas of the United States.

Outside the United States, the highest risk areas for Dengue are:

  • Central and South America
  • The Caribbean
  • Pacific Islands
  • Southeast Asia

If you are experiencing illness after traveling to a high-risk area, it is advisable to seek medical treatment to test for Dengue.

Which mosquito diseases can be contracted in NJ?

Mosquitoes in New Jersey can still transmit diseases other than Dengue. These include West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis. New Jersey residents are at most risk for these illnesses in summer and early fall. Many of the early symptoms of these mosquito-borne illnesses are flu-like and might include fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Severe illness is more likely to affect older adults and those with weakened immune systems.

Though rare, severe illness in EEE, WNV, and SLEV includes swelling of the brain, which could result in brain damage or even death.
