Are There Ticks in My Grass in the Fall and Winter?
Now that autumn is approaching its end, we can begin to consider all the holiday celebrations that will take in the coming months. The fall and winter seasons are characterized by vibrant colors, festive lights, and bitter cold, but did you know something insidious lies beneath our yards? We don't frequently consider the insects that annoy us when winter arrives, mostly because most of them have died off, but one insect species patiently awaits the return of warm weather. As much as we hope that they never come back, ticks are guaranteed to return next year. Ticks are extraordinarily resilient insects that may survive for up to three years in the wild. These bugs pose a hazard to us by biting us as well as spreading harmful illnesses to us. You're undoubtedly aware of the risks associated with Lyme disease and other bacterial infections spread by ticks as someone who lives in the Northeast, and it is always a good idea to be informed about these creatures; your health may depend on it! So, where can you typically find them in the outdoors, even in cold weather?
Where is tick control effective?
During the warmer months, ticks like to stay in areas where they can easily latch onto an unsuspecting victim. These areas tend to be in untrimmed, grassy areas and places with lots of leaf litter and natural detritus. Grass, especially, is a favorite perch for ticks. Tick behavior is different during the winter months, though. Ticks can only function in weather that is 40 degrees Fahrenheit or above, so they will seek shelter when they feel winter’s bite. So, there are a couple places where you might find ticks. In particular, mouse burrows are a favorite because they provide abundant shelter and they come with a blood source. Ticks are often found on mice, which thrive in untended environments where there is plenty of natural detritus to use as nesting materials. With this in mind, keep your yard clear of leaves, long grass, and other yard waste to discourage mice and ticks from living on your property.
