Zika Virus

Warmer weather and mosquito season will be coming soon to the Omaha metro area. As more people begin to travel outside the country to infected areas, the Zika virus and the mosquitoes that carry the virus will be a concern.

The Zika virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These are the same mosquitoes that spread Dengue and Chikungunya viruses. These mosquitoes typically lay eggs in and near standing water in things like buckets, bowls, animal dishes, flower pots and clogged rain gutters.

Typical symptoms of the Zika virus include fever, skin rash, and conjunctivitis, but can be extremely serious when contracted by pregnant women. In adults, the symptoms only last a few days but can cause serious birth defects for children in utero. There is currently no cure or vaccine for Zika.
