Why are mosquitoes worse after heavy rains?

During hurricane season in Northeast Florida, many of us are singing, “Rain, rain, go away!” We want the St. Johns River and McCoys Creek waters to subside. We want everyone’s power back on and blown-down trees cleared. We want everyone to be safe at home once more, after the winds and rain cause so much strife. After tropical storms, like Debby, however, Florida mosquitoes can be part of the aftermath – an all-out mosquito melee.

Why are mosquitoes worse after heavy rains?

Once the weather has cleared, mosquitoes will rejoin their hunt for warm blood, like yours, or even your pet’s. What’s more, you will probably notice an uptick in mosquito activity within a week or two after heavy rains. But why? The answer is pretty simple. Heavy rains leave a lot more areas of water and for longer periods of time. This includes drenched soil; overflown riverbanks with residual water left inland; water that has gathered among debris in gutters and downspouts; and even water at the bottom of storm drains. More water means improved mosquito breeding conditions, and breed they do!

Are all bugs worse after a hurricane or tropical storm?

Bugs in general know how to survive in the fiercest of weather. They inherently know where and how to seek shelter. Insects with nests, like ants, yellow jackets, and wasps will be flooded out of their happy homes to find drier environments. These pests – unhoused pests, as it were – might begin building new homes at yours!

Ticks benefit from rain, because if there is not enough moisture in the air, they can dehydrate and die. Rain and humidity is just fine with them! You are apt to see bigger tick populations after rainfall. Flies don’t mind the rain either, as they thrive on filth. They will be on the hunt for dead animals, food waste, and other agreeable detritus left in the wake of a deluge.
