Mosquito Control Services vs. Mosquito Control Devices
Posted by Mosquito SquadDecember 20, 2023
Have you ever wondered if you should pay for professional mosquito control services or try mosquito protection devices? What works, and what doesn’t?
If your answer is yes, you are not alone. Mosquito control services are not a newfangled idea. Mosquito Squad has performed millions of mosquito protection yard sprays since 2005. If you are thinking about replacing your mosquito control services with would-be protection devices, you must reconsider. Let’s compare and contrast a couple of popular methods of mosquito protection with professional yard treatments.
Mosquito Control Services vs. Ultrasonic Watches and Devices
Some days it’s a blessing, and other days it can be a curse. We live in a time where we are apt to upgrade at least one of our technological devices every year as features and protocols change so frequently. From smartphones and computers to smart TVs, the appeal of new technology is incredibly enticing. If the thought of a new ultrasonic mosquito protection watch is on your list of gadget must-haves this year, we implore you to do your research.
Consumer Reports warns us about ultrasonic devices that claim to emit high-frequency sounds that are too high for humans to hear but are just the right frequency to drive pests, including mosquitoes, away. The trouble is, there's no proof that they work. The FTC has investigated several sonic repellent makers for false advertising.
Wristbands are not mosquito control services. In a 2017 study in the Journal of Insect Science, researchers found they had no significant effect in repelling mosquitoes. Furthermore, in 2016, the Federal Trade Commission fined one wristband maker, Viatek, $300,000 for deceptive marketing of its mosquito control services wristbands. The commission says the company's claims that the bands protect against mosquitoes were not backed by scientific evidence.
As for sonic repellents, there's no proof that they work. The FTC has investigated several sonic repellent makers for false mosquito control services advertising. In 2016, the New York Attorney General's Office sent cease and desist letters to the makers of two specific brands of sonic repellent—STAR Ultrasonic Pest Repeller and iGear iGuard 2.0 Ultrasonic Insect Pest Repeller. "Numerous scientific studies show that [these devices] don't repel mosquitoes and may even attract mosquitoes," the attorney general said.
Mosquito Control Service vs. Bug Zappers
They shine and sizzle and thrill us with their bug killing capabilities. But truthfully, bug zappers are ineffective at zapping mosquitoes and have no benefit in the world of mosquito control services. They are the technology equivalent of “Snake oil Sales” at a country carnival.
The truth of the matter is that mosquitoes are not attracted to the light but use light as a navigation tool to get closer to your home. As they navigate closer to your home, they can pick up on your scent and bite you. They don’t go into the bug zapper. So really, what’s up with that? How gullible do those manufacturers think we are?
