Is This a Crab Spider?

It’s a crab, it’s a spider – or is it a crab spider?

This interesting looking spider has been bestowed the moniker of crab spider. However, this spider, the spinybacked orb weaver, is not even in the same family as those known as crab spiders. The Thomisidae family boasts approximately 2,000 species that are commonly called crab spiders. Our spinybacked orb weaving friend is from the Araneidae family, as are all orb weavers. This guy is classified more for his web weaving skills than his appearance – but he does look like a crab!

Are these spiders native to Florida?

Not all Florida spiders are native to our region but the spinybacked orb weaver is indigenous to Florida, commonly found in citrus groves. Even though they’re small in stature, they are often noticed for their remarkable appearance. They are equal parts cool and creepy!

Are spinybacked orb weavers out in Florida right now?

Male and female spiny backed orb weavers might be found in Florida throughout the year. However, both have their own peak activity periods.

You’re unlikely to see a male spiny backed orb weaver in December and January in Florida. Male spiders are most active in late autumn in Florida – October and November.

Adult female spiny backed orb weavers are most active in the months of October, November, December, and January.

Should you be worried about spiny backed orb weavers?

Like all spiders, the spinybacked orb weaving variety is not a direct threat to humans; meaning they do not set out to bite us or feed on our blood or flesh. They are happier to stay away from us humans but might be inclined to bite if they feel threatened. There are no known dangers for humans regarding their bites, as they are not venomous.

What do spinybacked orb weavers eat?

Having this intricate web builder in your yard might provide a bit of bug control, as they feast on the likes of beetles, flies, and moths, which they trap in their webs. Actually, finding this spider or any others around your home is an indication that you have enough food sources (i.e. bugs) to keep them fat and happy. Getting Jacksonville pest control could keep spiders away from your home, which is important if you are an arachnophobe!
