How to Keep Mosquitoes Away from Your Backyard Pool

Contrary to popular belief, not every backyard pool in Florida has a screened enclosure. How do you keep mosquitoes at bay when you want to enjoy your pool?
Florida heat and humidity are no joke! If you are one of the lucky residents in the Northeast Florida area, you have a backyard pool for cooling off. Many days in the summertime are simply too hot to enjoy our pools at midday, and so many of us seek asylum from the heat of the day as the sun begins to set. Evening and nighttime swimming can be refreshing but can prove nigh impossible because mosquitoes come out en force during those hours too. Here are a few ways to keep mosquitoes away from your backyard pool.
Step 1: Minimize splashing.
This can be especially difficult if you have kids, but one way to keep your pool area safer from mosquitoes is to keep the areas around your pool as dry as possible. Because mosquitoes need only a bottle cap full of water in which to deposit their eggs, minimizing splashing outside your pool can be extremely helpful in preventing your yard from becoming a mosquito breeding ground.
Step 2: Create a quick-drying pool surround.
There are great materials to use around your pool, whether it’s in-ground or above-ground, which can help by allowing water to evaporate quickly. If you have an in-ground pool, a concrete patio is often the ideal solution. Above-ground pools can benefit greatly from a wood or composite pool deck, or natural stone, paver, or concrete patio surround. If your above-ground pool is sitting in the grass, a pool pad can help keep your splash zone drier. The drier the areas around your pool, the less likely they attract female breeding mosquitoes.
Step 3: Create a place for floats and toys to dry.
Hanging up goggles, emptying pool toys, and standing up pool floats to dry after use will also help keep the areas around your safer from becoming a mosquito breeding haven. Toys and floats that are left with standing water inside can pose that very threat.
Step 4: Don’t bet on unreliable mosquito control solutions.
Pool-goers know that DEET sprays only work if you are not swimming. Don’t count on homemade mosquito control solutions, plantings, bug zappers, or fad devices to eliminate mosquitoes. Homespun concoctions, lemongrass plantings, and bug zappers offer only a false sense of security from mosquitoes.
Step 5: Hire a mosquito control company.
Mosquito Squad of Northeast Florida’s experienced mosquito control technicians are versed at spotting areas throughout your backyard, where mosquitoes can live and breed. They begin mosquito control treatments identifying these areas and breaking them up. Then, they will treat your yard for mosquitoes with one of our two proven solutions. You can choose for protection that lasts about three weeks with our EPA-registered barrier protection spray. Otherwise, you can choose our natural mosquito control, which consists of a proprietary base of essential oils that lasts about two weeks.
