Florida Fleas, Why They Never Go Away
Posted by Mosquito SquadOctober 10, 2024
If dastardly Florida fleas seem to be ever-present, it’s because they are.
Adult fleas, however, make up the fewest types of fleas in Florida. It is believed that 95% of the Florida flea population is comprised of eggs, larvae, and pupae, leaving only 5% of the population to be adults. But since a female flea can lay 50 at a time, more than 150 in her lifetime, it’s no wonder there are fewer adult fleas than any other life phase.
That is why it is crucial that if you find a flea in your personal space, you call on the pros at Mosquito Squad of Northeast Florida to help you formulate a flea control plan. Where there’s one or two or three fleas, there are likely many more. And if they are feeding on blood and breeding, there will be more fleas emerging within a few days.
What Types of Fleas Live in Florida?
The United States, including Florida, is mainly home to dog fleas and cat fleas, but make no mistake – they are committed to only one animal in name alone. These fleas do not discriminate when it comes to their blood meals. They’ll dine on dogs, cats, humans, or wild animals. Whichever mammal is close will become the flea’s target.
Do Fleas Ever Go Away?
An adult flea will only live approximately two weeks, but they leave many more behind! It is absolutely impossible to eliminate 100% of the flea population. These hardy pests find themselves in an agreeable climate here year-round, where they can proliferate – over and over and over. Geography, climate, and food sources are the driving factors that contribute to the omnipresence of fleas in Florida.
What Do Fleas Eat?
Adult fleas feed on their mammalian hosts’ blood, whether that be human, dog, cat, or rodent blood. Fleas in other life stages, such as larvae, feed on organic matter, which Florida has no shortage of. Fleas in their early life phases even feed on adult flea feces, which contains dried blood – so in a way, they also consume blood. What’s more, they can transmit nasty diseases through their bites. Flea control should be sought at your first flea sighting.
