Can Houseflies Bite?
Posted by Mosquito SquadAugust 20, 2024
House flies do not bite, but many other flies are categorized as biters.
In Florida, biting flies can be anything from one of the 35 different species of horseflies to no-see-ums. Yep, no-see-ums are small flies, sharing class Insecta and order Diptera with all other true flies.
Do Flies Bite Dogs?
Yes, any biting fly will bite animals, humans, and our pets. The purpose of their bite is to obtain a blood meal for reproduction. Sound familiar? You’re right, mosquitoes do that too!
Are Fly Bites Dangerous?
Generally, fly bites are not dangerous. In very rare cases, fly saliva could cause anaphylaxis. In addition to large welts, redness, and itching, some flies can deliver illnesses through their bites. Sand flies can transmit a parasite, called leishmaniasis. Though the only confirmed cases in the U.S. were in Texas and Oklahoma.
Deer fly and horse fly bites can result in tularemia, an infection that is also transmitted by ticks. Tularemia is a communicable infection that can be transmitted through contact with an infected animal and contaminated drinking water. This bacterial infection can be mild or serious, with possible life-threatening symptoms, including a fever as high as 104°.
Are Flies Dangerous Besides Their Bites?
The other class of flies is filth-breeding. Since flies frequent areas of decomposition, waste, and food rot, they are capable of transmitting diseases. This mechanical transmission can happen when a filth-breeding fly lands on your food, a surface in your home, or on your body, leaving disease pathogens behind. Illnesses that could be spread by filth-breeding flies include pink eye, dysentery, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis.
