West Nile Virus Confirmed in Fairfield CT
Posted by Mosquito SquadDecember 20, 2023
Now that summer is approaching its final act, it might be tempting to be less vigilant about protecting yourself against mosquitoes, but we’re here to tell you that doing so would be a mistake. Mosquitoes remain very active in August, and we can expect that these insects will continue searching for blood through much of the fall. Due to warming temperatures throughout our region, mosquitoes are active for longer portions of the year, meaning they have more time to pick up dangerous diseases that we are vulnerable to. Unfortunately, this is exactly what occurred in the past week in CT.
West Nile virus is here
So far, numerous mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus in eight counties in our state, including Darien, Stratford, Westport, and New Haven. With this disturbing revelation in mind, it is important to consider the ramifications of contracting West Nile virus. While the odds of contracting this virus remain relatively low, there can be severe consequences in severe cases. Most often, those who catch West Nile don’t exhibit any symptoms, those who do show signs of illness typically exhibit head and/or body aches, joint pain, vomiting, intestinal issues, and even rash. Almost all patients recover completely, but many can experience tiredness and weakness for weeks to months after being cured. For those who are over 50 years old, the chances of severe illness are much higher and the virus can result in death in rare cases. The downside of contracting this virus can be serious, but at the bare minimum you should consider defending yourself and your family against mosquito bites; they’re annoying enough even without the risk of contracting a disease from them. That’s why you should consider contacting a professional mosquito control source.
