If You Have Barberry, You Likely Have Ticks

Tick season is here, and it’s back in force. Throughout the Northeast, we are facing what might be considered a tick epidemic. Due to rising temperatures that cause mild winters and especially hot summers, there is less of a distinction between tick season and the rest of the year. At this point, ticks are active through the majority of the year, meaning we are at risk on several fronts. Firstly, we face the danger of encountering ticks in our own backyards. Although your property might seem like a haven free from these bloodsuckers, the reality is quite different.
Ticks thrive both in forested and suburban environments, meaning we are on the menu this summer and fall. As if a tick attaching itself to you wasn’t bad enough, you also face a significant chance of contracting a tick-borne disease should the tick remain attached for 24 hours or more. Why is this? Lyme disease takes 24-48 hours to transmit from an attached tick, and a significant proportion of the tick population in CT carries this illness.
Causing various symptoms ranging from joint swelling to short-term memory loss, Lyme disease is nothing to play with, and chronic cases are surprisingly common. Estimates vary, but 300,000 to 400,000 people contract this pathogen yearly, so it is likely the disease and the creatures that carry it are lurking somewhere in your yard. For example, if you have a barberry plant on your property, ticks are likely living somewhere on the plant. With small leaves and tiny spines along the branches, barberry plants are very common in CT. So common that you are likely no more than a few dozen yards away from one at any point in time. These plants are particularly good at providing shelter from the blazing sun, which is why ticks flock to them. Ticks like to remain in cooler areas of your yard before they pounce. To defend against these nasty critters, barberry plant removal is helpful, but professional tick control is your best bet.
