Does Lyme Disease Peak in the Fall?
Posted by Mosquito SquadDecember 20, 2023
Boo! The end of September is approaching rapidly, meaning we are well on our way to spooky season and the chilly weather that accompanies it. When cooler weather rolls in, we tend to think less of the insects that normally terrorize during the summer months, and for good reason! Cooler weather means fewer insects to worry about, there is one that hangs around longer than you might expect. Ticks are incredibly hardy creatures, especially considering their size, and they can survive in the wild for around three years. With such hardiness comes the ability to resist the effects of cold weather, so ticks will remain active during the fall!
Tick control is an important fall consideration
For anyone who likes to spend time outdoors, this fact is distressing for a few reasons. Firstly, ticks are parasites, meaning they feed on the blood of other animals to sustain them. Unfortunately for us, humans are just as much a target for these creatures as any other animal, so it is important to stay aware of the risks associated with a tick encounter. The second distressing component of a tick bite is not the bite itself, but rather the bacterial diseases that can be transmitted to you in the process. Lyme disease, for example, is one of these. Due to their feeding practices, ticks are inherently unsanitary, and our health can suffer greatly as a result. Adult ticks will stay active through fall, so stay aware. Fortunately, adult ticks are much easier to spot than their tiny counterparts, nymph ticks. Nymph ticks are young ticks that haven’t yet reached maturity. These tiny ticks can be as small as a poppy seed and are notoriously difficult to spot on the body.
Even though adult ticks are easier to find, there is still the risk of contracting a disease from one. Make sure to consult professionals to keep you defended through the fall as well as next spring and summer when tick populations explode again.
