EEE Is Gaining a Foothold in NH, Here’s How to be Prepared

As we approach peak summer in the coming weeks, we are also coming up on the peak season of our least-favorite insects: Mosquitoes. As much as we’d like to enjoy the summer unbothered by the various irritants these insects are responsible for, there is no avoiding the fact that mosquitoes are returning in force this year. This is due to a few different reasons. The main culprit for our mosquito problem in the Northeast is our rapidly changing climate. While we may not notice the environmental changes occurring around us, they are happening and with increasing severity.
Even small temperature changes can make all the difference, and mosquitoes take full advantage. Beginning as early as April, mosquitoes emerge with ravenous intent, aggressively looking for animals whose blood they can harvest. Much to our misfortune, humans are prime targets for a few mosquito species, and this preference is evident in the innumerable mosquitoes often found in our backyards. Unlike decades past, mosquito populations are on the rise, spelling trouble for the outdoor living season. Mosquito bites are the antithesis of outdoor enjoyment, and these insects harbor far more insidious dangers. In addition to the red, itchy bites they can deliver, mosquitoes can transmit dangerous diseases that can have life-changing consequences. Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is of particular concern.
Although this virus is relatively uncommon, the downside of contracting the disease is almost as bad as it can get. Mild cases typically result in flu-like symptoms, but severe cases can cause serious neurological damage and even death. Indeed, roughly 30% of serious cases result in death. Fortunately, it appears that a vaccine may be on the way. The potential vaccine is in stage 1 of trials, meaning it is a long way from being included in our vaccine regimen, but there is hope on the horizon. While we wait for a vaccine to be developed, however, there are great solutions available today! Professional mosquito control is a great way to defend your outdoor living space, as well as your health.
