Urgent Recommendation, Avoid Tick and Mosquito Bites
Posted by Mosquito SquadJuly 29, 2024
Why is the Tennessee DOH urging residents to implement tick and mosquito bite avoidance measures?
According to a story on Clarksville Online, the Tennessee Department of Health is reminding Tennesseans to defend against mosquito bites and tick bites alike. There are a few reasons for this recommendation.
More Time Spent Outdoors, Pros and Cons
Here in Middle Tennessee, we are right in the middle of prime summertime activities. We love being outdoors this time of year. Whether it be a day of hiking, a block party, a backyard barbecue, or an outdoor concert, we must be uber-vigilant in planning ways to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and ticks. Because we are spending so much more time outdoors in mid-summer, we are at higher risk of receiving one or the other.
More Ticks, More Mosquitoes – No Pros, All Cons
More Tennessee ticks and mosquitoes make us more susceptible to becoming an unwitting victim. By more, we mean ticks and mosquitoes are abundant and active this time of year. But it also means that Tennessee is experiencing the emergence of new species, like the tiger mosquito and lone star tick, which has introduced a new tick-borne illness to our residents. Breeding seasons for ticks and mosquitoes are lasting for longer each year, as our climate becomes warmer and warmer.
Increase in Lyme Disease in Tennessee
The Tennessee DOH also recently reported that each year sees an increase in confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Tennessee. This is a very important reason for us to be concerned about tick avoidance. Where there is tall grass, shrubbery, undergrowth, or low-hanging foliage, there could also be ticks in Tennessee. However, ticks can be carried into your yard or inside your home on your pets. Rodents too, can carry ticks into your yard. Nashville is ranked in the top 10 U.S. cities for mosquito populations and activity.
Recommendation for The Whole Family
When we receive an official recommendation, like the one recently issued by the TN Department of Health, it applies to all our family members, including pets. Children and pets are the most likely to receive tick bites and mosquito bites due to their movements into places where the pests are present – and they are closer to the ground than adults. The higher our chances of receiving a bite, the higher our chances of becoming infected with a vector-borne illness.
It is recommended that we perform a tick check on ourselves, our children, and our pets after spending time outdoors. And if playing in parks or public spaces, personal mosquito repellent is recommended for kids and adults. Use only veterinary approved products to protect your pets.
