Are There White Ticks?

If you see white ticks, they are simply engorged.

Ticks that are engorged with blood can look a whiteish or light gray color, but there are no species of ticks that are inherently white. Surprisingly, some ticks can even appear purple! There is one tick with a white dot, which is known as the lone star tick.

What are common colors of ticks?

Ticks in Tennessee range in color from brown, to reddish-brown and a combination of brown and black. Depending on their stage of life or engorgement level, they can appear to vary in color, but tend to stay within the same color families. Their color and markings denote their species.

Are all adult ticks the same size?

All hard ticks, no matter their species, go through the same life cycle, consisting of four stages. These phases are: egg, larva, nymph (tiny ticks, rampant spreaders of Lyme disease), and adult. The most prominent Tennessee ticks are black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, brown dog ticks, and lone star ticks. Less prominent in Tennessee, is the Asian Longhorned tick.

Adult hard ticks are not assured to be the same size, but they can be one-quarter to three-eighths of an inch long.

Tick Control, A Worthy Consideration in The Nashville Area

It is not a foregone conclusion that you will be infected with a tick-borne illness if you receive a tick bite. Some diseases, such as Lyme disease, requires that a tick be attached for at least 24 hours. Conversely, the black-legged tick, which is the carrier of Lyme bacteria, can also transmit the potentially fatal Powassan virus with a mere 15 minutes of attachment.

No tick bite should be disregarded just because the tick is not engorged. If you find any type of tick embedded in yourself, a family member, or pet, you should identify the tick and watch for any potential symptoms of tick-borne illness. Many of these illnesses present in a similar matter. The symptoms could include the feeling of having the flu, fever, muscle and joint pain, and nausea. If you suspect that you have been bitten by an infected tick, you should seek immediate treatment.

To lower your chances of tick encounters around your home or business, it is important to implement lawn care and outdoor home maintenance routines to make your property less likely to be an ideal tick habitat. Support those efforts with professional tick control from Mosquito Squad of Nashville.
