Pests and Fall Décor, What to Watch Out For

Nearly everyone loves a cornstalk bundle, chrysanthemums, and pumpkins on their doorsteps in autumn.

However, when decorating with natural materials, we must consider the possibility of Tennessee pest invasions. Whether by proxy on a wild animal or harbored inside a haybale, pests could spoil your beautiful autumn aesthetic. Here’s how!

Cornstalks, Corn, Pumpkins, and Haybales: What Could Go Wrong?

The problem with haybales is that therein lies a plentiful food source for certain pests. Seeds within the hay you transport and install at your doorstep might (and often do) attract hungry rodents for which food is dwindling. You might see squirrels, groundhogs, mice, and rats around your decorative haybales.

Dried corn ornamentation is super yummy to rodents and other wild animals, like raccoons, deer, opossums, and various birds. The same goes for pumpkins and gourds. The problem with enticing wild animals is that it would not be cool to encounter a hungry, scared skunk or rat on your doorstep. Add to that, these animals could bring ticks and fleas onto your property. Decorate with care or consider alternatives.

ALSO NOTE: It is never recommended to store natural décor inside or around your home for future use. Once taken down, these items should be disposed of.

What Are Alternatives to Natural Décor?

One great idea for replacing your fodder shocks and Indian corn, is crafting your own. There are many arts and crafts tutorials online, detailing how to make these items and more using materials that will not attract pests or animals, and will be reusable. Create faux cornstalk and leaf wreaths, buy pumpkins that you can paint or decorate yourself. Crafting fall decorations could also be a fun autumn tradition for your family, allowing you quality time and expanding your décor by the year.

Or you could choose to go the retail route, and purchase faux corn stalks, gourds, and many other items to ensure your outdoor decorations are not harboring or attracting pests.
