How Bad Are Mosquitoes in Brentwood?

Reported by Rachel Wegner in the Nashville Tennessean, mosquitoes with West Nile Virus were found in two Nashville neighborhoods a little over a year ago.

The mosquitoes carrying the virus were found in the Crieve Hall neighborhood near the intersection of Edmonson Pike and Holt Road and the Goodlettsville neighborhood near the intersection of West Monticello Avenue and Monticello Avenue.

There are three types of mosquitoes commonly found here: the Culex Mosquito (also referred to as the house mosquito), the Asian Tiger Mosquito, and the Yellow Fever Mosquito.

Culex, a large group of mosquitoes also known as common house mosquitoes, are the principal vectors that spread the viruses that cause West Nile fever, St. Louis encephalitis, and Japanese encephalitis, as well as viral diseases of birds and horses.

Brentwood mosquito control has identified that the tiger mosquito has been found to be infected with LaCrosse encephalitis viruses and West Nile virus, which can cause encephalitis, resulting in inflammation of the brain.

Yellow fever virus is an RNA virus that belongs to the genus Flavivirus. It is related to West Nile, St. Louis encephalitis, and Japanese encephalitis viruses. Yellow fever virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of infected Aedes or Haemagogus species mosquitoes.
