Are Ticks Still Out in September?

Are Tennessee ticks still out in September? Could there actually be a second late summer and fall peak activity season for ticks?
Yes, especially black-legged ticks in Tennessee. Nymph ticks become adults during this time of year. In preparation for their imminent diapause season, which is triggered by cold temperatures, these adult female ticks will be out for blood once more. This blood will provide nourishment that is required for the ticks to mate, which will produce new tick eggs in the coming spring.
Do all ticks remain active in September?
Not necessarily. While some ticks are triggered by the change of season, others are prompted by the length of the day. For example, the American dog tick’s activity will start to increase during spring and summer and slowly taper as we approach fall and winter. Black-legged ticks, also known as deer ticks, are active based on the temperature outside. Daily temperatures have to reach 39 degrees Fahrenheit or above for ticks to remain active, meaning these ticks can still target us during the winter months!
Do ticks lay eggs on their hosts?
It is very rare for ticks to lay eggs on their hosts. In almost all cases, ticks will consume blood from their host and depart soon after to lay eggs in tall grass and bushes where their young will have the best chance of encountering a passing animal. With this in mind, it is important to stay vigilant from spring through fall when walking through unkempt landscaping or wilderness areas as you can easily come across huge groups of young ticks with a hankering for a blood meal!
Are adult ticks ravenous in September?
While adult ticks do want to take their third and final blood meal this time of year, fall is not a busy time just because they are hungry for blood. During dry, hot summer days, ticks can dehydrate and die. They might not be so active in late June through August, when the heat is at its peak. But as the heat of summer settles, adult ticks can successfully begin to quest. September can be a very busy adult tick season, simply because the weather is opportune!
