From its unique Motown sound to its iconic food scene, there's a lot to love about the Metro Detroit area. One thing that's not so great is the area's tendency to find itself overwhelmed with mosquitoes once summer begins each year. Good news - Metro Detroit residents like you don't have to give in to the annual mosquito takeover. Mosquito Squad is here to fight back!

Why Do I Need Mosquito Control?

Beyond the itchy bites and annoying buzzing, mosquitoes in Metro Detroit pose a serious health risk. They can spread serious diseases, some of which affect humans and some of which affect animals. There are also mosquito-borne diseases that can affect humans and pets alike.

  • West Nile virus: Most people infected with West Nile virus do not feel sick. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.
  • Zika virus: Zika virus is especially dangerous for pregnant women, as it can cause birth defects. For this reason, pregnant women should not travel to areas with a risk of Zika. It has been an issue in the United States in years prior, though it is not as much of a problem as it was before.
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE): EEE is a rare but serious disease that can affect people of any age. Severe cases of EEE (involving encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain) begin with the sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills, and vomiting. The illness may then progress into disorientation, seizures, and coma. It also affects many different animals, including mammals, reptiles, and birds.
  • Heartworm: Heartworm disease is serious and potentially fatal. It usually infects dogs, but cats and even ferrets are sometimes diagnosed with the disease. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs in the body.

Vigilance is required in order to prevent these diseases, which can only be achieved through effective and thorough mosquito control measures.
