Lyme Disease vs. STARI
Posted by Mosquito SquadDecember 20, 2023
Warm weather is in full swing this summer, and ticks are becoming more abundant than ever. The Northeast, despite its numerous upsides, is a veritable paradise for these tiny arachnids. As we spend more time outside this season, some important considerations need to be made, especially about safety while in nature. Most people associate ticks with the time they spend in grassy parks and nature hikes, but these creatures are far too abundant to be restricted to their traditional habitat. No, ticks are found in natural spaces throughout our region, including in our very own backyards. Obviously, this is a distressing fact, but it needs to be said to spread awareness about the dangers ticks pose. Not only do ticks steal our blood while we are unaware, but they are also a severe danger to our health.
As you likely know, Lyme disease is very common in the Northeast due to the prolific feeding behavior of ticks. In fact, this pathogen is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States, with between 300,000 to 400,000 people becoming infected every year. With the knowledge that many ticks are carrying this disease, including those that lurk in your yard, it is important to understand the risks of living near them. Lyme disease is dangerous, but isn’t the only disease carried by these creatures. Others have been studied much less extensively, making them difficult to diagnose as well as assess in regards to potential long-term effects. Furthermore, more than one species of tick lives on Long Island.
Deer ticks, also known as black-legged ticks, are the main cause of Lyme disease, while Lone Star ticks are responsible for southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). STARI is relatively new, as far as understanding its effects go, but its symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and even muscle spasms. Lyme disease symptoms are extremely similar, except in chronic cases, which can result in swollen joints and issues with memory. The safest bet is to keep ticks away in the first place, which is where professional tick control comes in.
