A team of technological innovators at the University of Calgary has spent the last 10 years working on a device called the “e-mosquito”. Wait… I know what you are thinking. Why in the world would they be trying to recreate an electronic version of something we are constantly trying to destroy? Well this little bug bites to help, not to harm.

AUTOMATIC BLOOD SUGAR TESTING

The initial objective is to test levels of glucose in the blood. Most diabetics or others with issues that require testing have to prick their fingers and transfer blood to test strips to check their glucose levels. The goal of the e-mosquito is to find a capillary through the skin with such little effect, that it won’t be felt at all. Then it will test the levels and transmit them to a smartphone or even a healthcare professional. They call it an e-mosquito, but it actually looks like a watch, and right now it can’t seem to pull enough blood for the testing strip. To adjust it would make it bigger or more complicated so this product is still in the project stage, but it’s a very interesting one to keep our eye on. Remember how big the first cell phone was??

If they’ve been working on this e-mosquito for 10 years and are still at it, this team must believe it has great potential. They even believe that it could eventually be used to test for other things like genetics and cancer screening, but first they have to make it work for glucose.
