A group of mosquitoes in New Mexico is called a scourge. Do you know what words describe a group of gnats, spiders, scorpions, and fleas?
An army of frogs, a shiver of sharks – we have some fantastic words to define groups of animals! Who doesn’t get a giggle from hearing, “A prickle of porcupines?” Mammals and amphibians are not the only animals that have fun group descriptions.
It is common to run into a group of gnats in Las Cruces. They can be found outside your home and even make their way indoors. The same can be said for scorpions, spiders, and fleas. Here are a few fun words that are used to describe these groups of pests.
A group of gnats is a swarm.
Perhaps it should come as no surprise that a group of gnats is called a swarm, since swarming is key to the survival of gnats. Swarming involves moving together or forming a large group. With gnats, swarming makes it easier for males and females to find one another and mate. This helps gnats grow their population in Las Cruces and other areas of New Mexico.
Along with a swarm, a group of gnats can also be called a horde or cloud. A horde, of course, refers to a large group. Meanwhile, a cloud is a collection of gnats that moves through the sky, much like a cloud.
A group of spiders is a clutter or cluster.
No one likely wants to come into contact with a clutter or cluster of spiders. Spiders cluster so they can protect their food and feed. Female spiders also cluster together to lay their eggs in groups. Oftentimes, when female spiders do this, they make sure their newborns have food waiting for them.
A group of scorpions is a bed.
Lying on a bed of scorpions is unlikely to help you get a good night's sleep. Yet, a group of scorpions is commonly referred to as a bed. It's also been referred to as a nest.
A group of fleas is a scratch.
If you are dealing with a flea infestation, expect scratching along the way. In this instance, you're probably facing a scratch of fleas as well.
