What Repels Mosquitoes from Biting You?

The arrival of summer is often accompanied by swarms of mosquitoes, especially at dusk. If you’re looking for relief, you’re not alone.

Mosquito bites are not only itchy annoyances, but they can also be dangerous.

If you’ve ever experienced the itchy discomfort that comes from mosquito bites, you know how annoying these pests can be. But did you know that mosquitoes also pose some significant health risks? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mosquitoes are capable of transmitting several harmful diseases. To help reduce the likelihood of mosquito bites, the CDC recommends several preventive measures.

  • Wear Protective Clothing: If you are spending time outside, minimize skin exposure by dressing in long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use Insect Repellent: Try store-bought repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Seal Entry Points: Install or repair screens on windows and doors to discourage mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Get the Air Moving: Ceiling fans, box fans, and even air conditioning all make it difficult for mosquitoes to fly well.
  • Minimize Standing Water: Regularly empty items like flowerpots, birdbaths, and clogged gutters to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

What Naturally Repels Mosquitoes?

You can use natural, DIY repellents to help protect yourself against mosquitoes. Many of these even use ingredients that you likely already have at home. Plants and essential oils are especially effective for this, though you should take care never to apply essential oils directly to skin.

  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus: Derived from the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus tree, it contains a chemical that is repellent to many bugs. After DEET, it has the best track record for reliably repelling mosquitoes.
  • Geraniol: Found in certain plants, including citronella and lemongrass, this is a short-acting repellent that is useful for brief periods outdoors.
  • Catnip oil: According to the EPA, this repellent can offer protection for up to 7 hours.
  • Lavender: You can extract this by crushing lavender flowers. It has additional analgesic, antifungal, and antiseptic benefits.
  • Citronella: This oil works by masking human scents that attract mosquitoes.
  • Tea tree oil: This repellent is particularly popular in Australia. It is already known to have antiseptic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, and field testing has demonstrated some efficacy in repelling mosquitoes.

A Natural Solution for Lake Gaston Mosquito Control

Many of us are constantly on the lookout for ways we can help to protect our loved ones from mosquitoes without unnecessary exposure to chemicals. That’s why Mosquito Squad developed its natural mosquito control treatment. This natural alternative contains ingredients like geraniol, castor oil, cedarwood oil, and others. It is effective for up to 21 days, just like our signature protective barrier treatment. Also, like our traditional treatment, after application, you’ll notice a reduction of up to 80-85% in the population of mosquitoes in and around your home. An added benefit is its delightful smell, which will pleasantly surround your home for a while before the treatment settles.

Mosquito Control in Lake Gaston, a Traditional Approach

Over the last twenty years, we’ve worked hard to bring effective mosquito control to our customers. For that reason, our traditional protective barrier treatment is our most popular mosquito control treatment. The treatment has been proven effective, to the tune of reducing mosquitoes by up to 85-90% for up to three weeks of application. You can maintain this control with options like our automatic misting system or our subscription plan, or you can call us out for a special event spray to help you with a one-time outdoor gathering.
