Why Chiggers Are Annoying

Chiggers are small bugs that thrive in areas with tall grass or dense vegetation, and highly shaded areas during the dry season. Their bites can cause humans to experience an itchy rash. These pests are close relatives to ticks and are so small that they can’t be seen by the human eye.

With four life stages—egg, larva, nymph, and adult—chiggers can live up to three months. During their larval stage, they attach themselves to human or animal hosts, causing irritating welts as they digest tissue at the location of the bite. If left undisturbed, a chigger will feed on its host for multiple days.

While North American species of chiggers are NOT a significant source of disease, their relatives in Asia and the South Pacific can transmit scrub typhus. Despite being relatively harmless for those in the United States, chiggers still cause a significant amount of discomfort because of their feeding habits.

The Problem with Clover Mites

Around spring, many people notice small, red bugs crawling on their porch, patio, outdoor furniture, and plants. These tiny creatures are clover mites and they’re most active in temperatures between 50° and 75° F. Using a process called parthenogenesis, female clover mites can reproduce without mating and lay about 70 eggs in areas such as concrete cracks, between walls, or under tree bark.

Like chiggers, clover mites aren’t known to transmit any significant diseases in North America. However, also like chiggers, clover mites have a reputation for being annoying. Besides being unsightly when appearing in large numbers, these pests leave behind a reddish-brown stain on surfaces.
