When Do Mosquitoes Go Away?

Mosquitoes are most active when temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Because of this, in most areas, including Hartford, CT, mosquito season is classified as beginning in late spring/early summer. This also means that mosquito season will not end until around the first frost or when temperatures are consistently below 45-50 degrees, especially at night.

Mosquito species are incredibly averse to direct sunlight and the brightness of day, as the sun dehydrates them, so they are naturally less active in the mornings and afternoons. However, from sundown to sunrise, mosquitoes are rampant and will venture out in droves to feed and reproduce. The bad news is that most of the time, especially in the heat of the summer, humans’ most active times outdoors are also in the dusky hours.

The end of the mosquito-friendly season typically coincides with the first fall frost, which occurs anywhere from late September to mid-October in the Hartford area, depending on the year.

Dangers of Mosquitoes

Worldwide, more than a million people are seriously affected by mosquito-borne disease, with more than 1,000 of the international deaths due to mosquito-borne illness occurring here in the U.S. each year. It is important to be aware of the risks of mosquito infestation in your yard, as these illnesses are not exclusive to areas beyond your home. Illnesses spread by mosquitoes include but are not limited to: West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, Zika Virus, Chikungunya, and Yellow Fever. In pets, heartworms are a hugely common parasitic infection spread by mosquitoes and can pose a huge threat to the livelihood and well-being of our beloved furry friends.

Many mosquito-borne diseases can be identified by symptoms that include but are also not limited to fever, localized and rapidly spreading rash and swelling, severe eye irritation, muscle weakness, aches, and stiffness, as well as intense headaches.

DIY Mosquito Control

In addition to planting herbs like rosemary, lavender, or lemongrass, smoke is a great natural mosquito repellant, which is great news as bonfire season approaches! If you are planning an outdoor gathering, it might be wise to light a fire to congregate around as the odor and heat of the smoke overpowers bugs and keeps them from swarming. Alternatively, our professionals recommend lighting a citronella candle on a patio or porch–or two or three–as the aromatic smoke repels mosquitoes from the surrounding area.
