The Dangers of Ticks!
Posted by Mosquito SquadAugust 8, 2017
Ticks are not only a nuisance to deal with, they are also a carrier of disease. Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Ehrlichiosis are among the tick borne diseases that are found in the state of Virginia.
Let’s get to know these a little better to understand the threat ticks pose.
Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is an illness that is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore muscles and joints and sometimes a red rash that imitates a bulls-eye. If not treated right away, Lyme disease can cause serious problems for joints, the nervous system and the heart.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a bacterial disease spread through the bite of an infected tick. Symptoms include fever, headache, and rash. If not treated right away with antibiotics, it can be deadly.
Ehrlichiosis
Ehrlichiosis is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick, the lone star tick. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches, and they occur within 1-2 weeks following a tick bite.
If you’ve been walking in wooded areas and begin to feel these symptoms after finding a tick on you, make sure to consult a medical physician immediately.
How can we help?
There has been an increase in concern for ticks from our Mosquito Squad customers so we wanted to make sure we took action. This fall we are offering tick treatments using the barrier treatment in conjunction with another treatment we call tick tubes.
Tick tubes are placed throughout your yard to attract what ticks usually see as their first host, a mouse. These tick tubes are filled with cotton that have been soaked in our product. The mice take these pieces of cotton and bring them back to their homes to create a nest. As the nymph tick goes in search of its first meal, it must cross the treated cotton to get to the nice which at that time eliminates the tick.
Our barrier treatment will reduce the current adult tick population while the tick tubes prevent nymph ticks from becoming adults when spring comes around.
